Eight loaders were confirmed dead
after a lorry ferrying sand to Mai Mahiu town in the outskirts of
Naivasha town overturned at Kigecha area on the Mai Mahiu-Narok road.
Six others sustained injuries and
three were rushed to Naivasha sub county hospital, while the other three
were rushed to Kijabe Mission Hospital following the 4.30 pm accident.
Seven of them died on the spot, while one succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to hospital.
Four of them were said to be in
critical condition, while two victims of the gruesome accident were
rushed to hospital in “fairy stable condition.”
OVERTAKE
According to an eye witness, Leonard
Kalepa, the lorry driver was trying to overtake a motorcyclist when he
lost control of the vehicle.
“The driver lost control and the vehicle overturned killing the seven loaders on the spot,” he told the Nation.
All the victims were sitting atop the
loaded lorry and those who escaped were thrown few metres away. Those
who died were covered with sand.
The eight victims are said to belong to the Pole Pole Youth Group based at the Mai Mahiu-Narok junction.
Former Nakuru County Council
Chairman, John Murigu, who was among the first people to arrive to the
scene, blamed the accident to speeding.
“It was apparent the driver of the lorry was speeding at the time of the accident,” he said
